Alonissos This island lies in the northern Sporades, in the middle of the chain of islands which begins with Skiathos. The villages on this island are opposite Skopelos. The principal village, Alonissos, is situated on a hill. Despite the damage done by an earthquake in 1965, some of the traditional houses still remain. Near Alonissos are many smaller islands. The best known are Kira Panagia (with a monastery), Gioura (with the cave of Cyclops), the shelter Piperi, Pappous, Peristera and Skantzoura. These islands were chosen by the Mediterranean seals as a shelter. Between these islands there is a park to protect the species. |
